Upon invitation from Nature Materials Barbara Malič and Tadej Rojac wrote a News&Views piece about the paper of Fei Li and colleagues High piezoelectricity via enhanced disorder. (published online in Nature Materials, March 19, 2018). Li et al. showed how ultrahigh piezoelectricity in relaxor-ferroelectric ceramics is engineered by chemical and structural heterogeneities at the nanoscale. By rare-earth doping of PMN-PT ceramics they achieved piezoelectric charge coefficient d33 up to 1500 pC/N, the highest ever reported in ceramics.
